The jinn or djinn (often also: genie) (الجن) is a spirit-being from pre-islamic Arabia. They often are found caught in bottles or "magic lamps" and will grant three wishes to the person, which is releasing them. "Aladdin's Wonderful Lamp", from the early 18th century, is probably the best known story, concerning genies.
