The vampire is a humanoid creature of the night, that feeds on the blood and life essence of the living. Their physical description vary from culture to culture, and while some are brutish or malformed, the modern vampire is often strikingly beautiful.

The word vampire can be dated back to 1734, although similar creatures have been part of superstition in many parts of the world prior to the coining of that name.

- Empress Maria Theresa issued a vampire decree in 1755, when superstition caused many deaths. Her personal physician was Gerard van Swieten, who also wrote a book named "Vampyrismus".
