The sphinx is a creature with the body of a lion, the head of a human, and at times depicted with the wings of a bird. The sphinx is intelligent but treacherous. They prey on travellers, who must answer a riddle in order to leave in peace.

Although many cultures in that general region featured sphinges in their mythology, the oldest and perhaps most well known, are the ones from Egypt. The oldest known sphinx statue dates back to around 2700 BC. In egyptian mythology, the sphinx is usually depicted with the face of a man, while the sphinx of greek mythology is female.
